(Photo credit: Mike McMillan /USFS) The climate event La Niña that can cause devastating weather, impacting communities and industries from agriculture to tourism, is happening more frequently and lasting longer, according to new public impact research from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Atmospheric scientist Bin Wang from the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology ( SOEST ) found that five out of six La Niña events since 1998 have lasted more than one year, including an unprecedented triple-year event.
