The federal government has struck a new deal with most of the states in the nation's largest river system. The agreement, announced last week, extends the $13 billion 2012 Murray-Darling Basin Plan to rebalance water allocated to the environment, irrigators and other uses. Hartwig Adjunct Research Fellow, Australian Rivers Institute, Griffith University Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek said the government has: negotiated a way to ensure there is secure and reliable water for communities, agriculture, industry, First Nations and the environment.
