From my understand, the new case cover is quite mandatory for the new mini since you cannot put the ipad flat on desk due to the camera bump ! I assume the new cover acts as a shim to level everything flat. If you look carefully it actually has the levelers on the back of the iPad so you won't have to worry about that the ipad mini, is flat exept at camera bump, there is no levelers.
