After reading Lincoln Steffens' autobiography as an early investigative journalist, White arranged to meet him," columnist Ross Eric Gibson writes. "The elderly Steffens had argued politics with Woodrow Wilson, Vladimir Lenin, Mussolini, Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, and was just as confrontational with White."
