What Is Happening in Israel?
Palestinian militants from the armed group Hamas launched a surprise coordinated attack on Israel by land, sea and air on Saturday morning. Israel declared war in response, with another Iran-backed group—Hezbollah—attacking military targets in northern Israel from its positions in southern Lebanon early Sunday. On October 9, at 11 a.m. ET, the Journal's World Coverage Chief Gordon Fairclough speaks with Deputy Middle East Bureau Chief Shayndi Raice, based in Tel Aviv, about the developing situation.

How Chili's Is Prepping for Tough Times, Starting With the Fries
When Kevin Hochman became CEO last June of the company that owns Chili's Bar & Grill, amid a labor shortage and escalating costs , he started looking for bottlenecks in the kitchen. There, he learned about Chili's french-fry problem. Fries were delivered in their own metal baskets, driving cooks and dishwashers crazy. They had to be lined with paper before each serving and cleaned afterward, some 40 million times a year. In short order, Mr. Hochman scrapped the baskets for fries, advancing his grand ambitions for the Southwest-style restaurant chain: improve service and boost profits.

Insurers Avoid Picking Up Businesses' Covid-19 Pandemic Costs
Businesses have long relied on insurance to cover losses from unexpected disruptions. But they have faced an uphill battle in trying to get carriers to pay out on one of the biggest ever: pandemic shutdowns.Insurers that sold 'business interruption' coverage have denied claims by companies that suffered through lockdowns or other fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic, and many courts have shot down subsequent lawsuits. The presence of virus wasn't enough to trigger the policies, which generally require some kind of physical damage to property, the courts say.

TikTok Adds Automated Captions, Making Platform More Open to Deaf People
TikTok is introducing automated captions, a feature that will add subtitles to posts in its popular video-sharing app without requiring users to enter the text themselves. The feature, which is being rolled out in the coming weeks, is the latest attempt by a social-media company to make its products more accessible and avoid shutting out large segments of the population. Often those moves have followed pressure from advocates, as was the case last summer, when Twitter Inc. began letting users share audio tweets, but initially didn't allow captioning, making it useless to deaf people.

Federal Reserve Meets This Week Amid Expectations for Major Central Banks to Raise Rates
Good day. All eyes this week will be on the Federal Reserve, which is likely to begin winding down its $120 billion-a-month asset-buying program with an eye toward ending those purchases by next June. Markets will look for hints from the Fed about potential interest-rate increases amid growing expectations that major central banks will quickly tighten monetary policy. For example, while European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde last week pushed back against market expectations that the ECB will increase rates next year, investors thought her message was too weak and added to their bets that the bank would soon.

As Rocket Launches Take Off, So Do Concerns About Emissions
The number of rocket launches rose by nearly one-third last year to 180, according to one tracker. The world's increasing reliance on satellites for everything from weather monitoring to communications services to GPS, as well as a burgeoning space-tourism industry, means rocket launches are growing rapidly. Also growing is concern about what impact all of those launches might have on the atmosphere. While emissions from aerospace activities are still relatively small compared with those of aviation and other industries, some of the pollutants released have the potential to contribute to global warming and damage the ozone layer, researchers say.

OK, fine. I'll be the general manager of the New York Mets. If no one wants the job, I'll sign up. I'll do it for $4 million, or better yet, $9 million, plus three new bicycles, and all the coffee cake I can eat. You're welcome, New York. It's come to this. The baseball Mets are badly in need of a boss, and can't seem to find one.
