The Department of Education's test application is a long-awaited first step of the policy announced in late August, allowing people with federal student loans to apply for up to $20,000 of debt relief, depending on what kind of financial aid they received and how much money they make.

Leon Neal/Getty Images (NEW YORK) — The cryptocurrency exchange FTX owes creditors $3.1 billion, according to court documents filed late Saturday night. The Bahamas-based platform filed for bankruptcy earlier this month after the company, run by 30-year-old Sam Bankman-Fried, collapsed. The company saw its value soar to a peak of $32 billion in January. Creditors' names were not listed on the court filing, but the largest is owed $226,280,579. As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, FTX was required to list to the court its 50 largest creditors — either individuals or corporations — who are owed money.

ABC News (NEW YORK) — Missy Jenkins Smith was a student at Heath High School in Paducah, Kentucky, in 1997 when a shooter opened fire, killing three of her classmates and injuring her and four others. Last month, she testified in front of the Kentucky parole board about how the events 25 years ago continue to impact her today. 'I could speak for hours about what my life has been like every minute of every day for the last quarter century without the use of my legs,' she said during the hearing. Smith is paralyzed from the chest down and now relies on a wheelchair.

Douglas Mason/Getty Images Tributes have been pouring in following the news that 'Margaritaville' singer Jimmy Buffett passed away Friday, September 1 at the age of 76. According to the official obituary posted to the late singer's website, Buffett died after a four-year battle with Merkel Cell Skin Cancer, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer. The obit notes, 'He continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show, a surprise appearance in Rhode Island, in early July.' Among the tributes coming in for Buffett, Paul McCartney wrote, 'It seems that so many wonderful people are leaving this world, and now Jimmy Buffett is one of them.
