Ed Hennings Launches His Real Man Campaign
On June 11, 1996, 22-year-old was a gang leader and a drug dealer in Milwaukee's urban Black community. He had wads of cash and a fast car. He had respect and notoriety. He told me, 'I was the go-to guy in my family, in my circle, with my friends, in my community, know what I'm sayin'? If you need something, call Ed. If you need some meat on the barbecue grill, call Ed.' Then, on that June 11, he made one very bad decision. He shot and killed a rival gang member. For his crime, he spent 20 years in Wisconsin prisons.

Lawsuit Filed to Block Vos' Effort to Impeach Protasiewicz
Yesterday, lawyers in Madison filed with the Wisconsin Supreme Court an emergency petition to protect Justice from an unconstitutional impeachment by the state assembly.  Protasiewicz won an outsized victory in the April election, shifting the balance of supreme court power from a conservative to a progressive majority. Since Protasiewicz's election, Speaker Vos and members of the Wisconsin state assembly have stated their intentions to invoke constitutional powers to impeach. An impeachment would effectively short circuit the new progressive majority.

by Susan Harpt Grimes Aug. 09, 2023 7:27 a.m. Ope! Looks like it's time to head on over to Boswell Books for an appearance by comedian and Emmy award-winning writer Taylor Kay Phillips. Phillips will discuss her humorous new book,  A Guide to Midwestern Conversation , on August 9 at 6:30 p.m. Phillips is a Midwestern native and she successfully manages to poke fun of, and yet create a pleasing tribute to, Midwestern language, niceness and the generally positive attitude that pervades our regional culture with her writing.

Soil Health for the Home Garden
More small and mid-sized farms are transitioning to regenerative agriculture. There's no official definition of regenerative agriculture, but the concept typically entails improving soil health to boost biodiversity and organic matter. This is accomplished by eliminating or reducing chemical/synthetic inputs and using cover crops to reduce soil erosion and cut off weeds. Healthy soil yields nutrient-dense, healthier plants. There are ways to use regenerative practices in the home garden to improve soil health and quality.

Photographer Wendy Andrews Touches Hearts
Wendy Andrews is a professional photographer who finds her job to be both fun and rewarding. While fun is a key part of it, it's also hard work that she has mastered over the years.  How long have you been a professional photographer and when did you know it was more than a hobby? Ten-plus years as a professional photographer. I should have been a photographer my whole life, sadly I had one parent who didn't believe in the Arts as a career. When I had kids, I encouraged them to follow their passions and dreams.

carbon by Sirintip
The Thai-Swedish singer's frame of reference on her sophomore album is humanity's effect on climate. She doesn't voice her study on the subject so much in lyrics. Instead, she implies her sense of conservatorship primarily through the music, with her words often as not elliptically referencing her primary topic. The intrigue of carbon comes from figuring out what Sirintip is on about: what goes on in the clouds, among herself and other people, both? But her poetic enigmas might be less commanding were she not such a musical polymath.

Valentine's Day is Always Special Everywhere—Especially for people in love
Ahh, Valentine's Day. How do we love thee? Let me count the ways. That is, people in love, falling in love or thinking about love. February 14—like the state of Virginia—is for lovers. Always was. Always will be.  Memories of this singular day—observed for St. Valentine and dedicated to choosing or complimenting sweethearts—are special to me and millions of others who agree that love makes the world go round. Of all our holidays and annual celebrations, perhaps none mixes fun and sentiment quite as well.

Milwaukee Activist's Documentary, ‘What We're Hungry For,' on the History and Politics of Hunger in America
Jim Winship took the long road to becoming a documentary film director. In many ways, his debut feature,  What We're Hungry For , about rural Wisconsin food pantries and the obstacles they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, was 50 years in the making. His social work career, specializing in poverty and food insecurity, started in the early ‘70s with the Peace Corp in El Salvador. Afterwards, he worked for a social service agency in Columbus, Ohio, where he met his wife, Rita. They moved to Athens, Georgia where he helped start a food pantry and earned his masters and doctorate at the University of Georgia.

After Much Anticipation, 3rd Street Market Hall Opens
Milwaukeeans of a certain age remember the splendor of the Grand Avenue mall when it opened in Downtown Milwaukee in 1982. Fast-forward through four decades of suburbanization, a lull in urban investment, and internet shopping, and the once-glorious Grand Avenue eventually became a defeated presence with vacant stores. Today, the 3rd Street Market Hall (275 W. Wisconsin Ave.), a food hall celebrating the city's diverse cuisine, is breathing new life into the former mall. The 3rd Street Market Hall, owned by restaurateur Omar Shaikh, along with real estate developers Joshua Krsnak and Tony Janowiec, is part of The Avenue, a mixed-use development of office, retail and apartment space.

Integrative psychiatrist Dr. Aruna Tummala, medical director of Trinergy Center for Integrative Psychiatry (12800 W. National Ave., New Berlin), takes a holistic approach to emotional-physical health, blending Western medicine with Ayurveda, India's 5000-year-old medical system that focuses on mind-body balance through diet, lifestyle medicine, natural herbs and detoxification protocols to achieve health and traditions. The Eve of Destruction
In a protest song from his era, P.F. Sloan crooned to an imagined skeptic, 'You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.' At that point, 1965, we'd lost JFK to assassination, the Vietnam War was ramping up, civil unrest was escalating, and the Cold War, with its persistent threat of nuclear Armageddon, was actually very hot. Yet, even then, I didn't believe we were headed toward dystopia. Now, increasingly, I do. Growing scientific data suggest we are indeed on the eve of destruction. What's more, while anecdotal, many of the people I see in therapy also sense it.

Wisconsin Waters: The Ancient History of Lakes, Rivers, and Waterfalls by Scott Spoolman
(Wisconsin Historical Society Press) Wisconsin was blessed with a super-abundance of rivers, lakes and waterfalls carved by the advance and retreat of glaciers during the last ice age. Environmental writer Scott Spoolman selects several for his account of how that wealth of water has molded Wisconsin's landscape and shaped the lives of those who have lived here. The state's name, Spoolman explains, probably derives from an Algonquin word relating to running streams. The indigenous peoples of Wisconsin produced technologies to sustain their water-borne cultures including birch bark canoes and copper fishhooks from mining shallow mineral deposits.

Light the Hoan Honors Hanukkah at a Time of Rising Antisemitism
Tonight, the Hoan Bridge will be lit in honor of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. The holiday coincides with an alarming report from the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, citing an astonishing 459 percent rise in antisemitic incidents here in Wisconsin from 2015 through 2021. The increase in Wisconsin parallels an increase in nationally, tracked and reported by organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and the FBI's annual reporting of hate crimes. 'What we know is that historically, when there has been widespread economic and social upheaval, there is often antisemitic scapegoating and conspiracy theories that follow in its wake,' says Miryam Rosenzweig, president and CEO of Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

Milwaukee Metropolitan Community Church Celebrates 50 Years
As the LGBTQ liberation movement began to mobilize in response to the Lavender Scare of the 1950s, the community's infrastructure from athletics to political advocacy and healthcare developed as well. Spirituality, too, would be addressed. For some LGBTQ Christians, the alternative to enduring oppressive condemnation from the pulpits of their mainstream churches would be to form their own, ones based on purer values of acceptance, compassion, love and social justice. Founded in 1968 by Troy Perry, a Baptist minister defrocked because he was gay, the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches addressed the spiritual needs of those LGBTQ individuals who sought positive Christian fellowship.

Acacia Theatre Explores Jane Austen's ‘Sense and Sensibility'
Acacia Theatre Company continues its exploration of the endurance of faith and love amid life's setbacks and tragedies with its ambitious production of the Jane Austen classic, Sense and Sensibility. It's 'ambitious' for taking on such a beloved epic with such a large cast (16), juggling English accents and spanning time and geography.  The good news? It works due in large part to a very solid acting ensemble and the intimate charm Director Erin Nicole Eggers brings to the story of the Dashwood family in England in the late 18th Century.

The Year in Music
Let's face it, livestream concerts suck. They are pale imitations compared to experience of being in a space where musical molecules are moving. The pandemic forced live music to hibernate and mutate. Several artists were able to work well in the format. In February, Todd Rundgren followed the rules and safely camped out with his band in Chicago where he played a virtual 25-city tour, with each show tailored to the evening's city. The Feb. 28 show was geared to Milwaukee/Madison. For that night Rundgren's career-long investment in technology, exquisite musicianship and songwriting transcended the laptop screen.

Free Will Astrology: Week of Feb. 24, 2022
ARIES (March 21-April 19): "A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it," wrote author G. K. Chesterton. Amen to that! Please regard his observation as the first part of your horoscope. Here's the second part: It's sometimes the right approach to move in harmony with the flow, to allow the momentum of elemental forces to carry you along. But now is not one of those times. I suggest you experiment with journeys against the flow. Go in quest of what the followers of easy options will never experience.

‘Paint' Finds the Joy of Kitsch
Bob Ross was a populist in the elitist 'art world.' Not for him abstraction, much less the conceptual art that demands a safecracker to decode. He preferred landscapes to soup cans and painted live on public television for many years, inspiring generations of weekenders to pick up the brush. His artwork conveyed no message except the joy he—and millions—found in rendering and recognizing 'naturalistic' scenes from nature. Writer-director Brit McAdams'  Paint  is a fictional story inspired by the Ross persona.

Grateful People are Happy People
This Thanksgiving, many of us will bow our heads and mouth a few words about our blessings and whatever we believe to be their source. But giving thanks can be a far cry from actually being thankful. Like those who only adhere to the tenants of their religious beliefs while in a house of worship, some of us confine our sense of gratitude to a short prayer over a daily meal, or just at Thanksgiving dinner alone. There are others, however, who live a truly thankful life. Within their spirits one senses a persistent sense of gratitude, not one confined to a holiday, but always present, like a warm glow illuminating all aspects of their being.
