Water main break in North Philadelphia shut off by emergency crews
A large water main break that caused flooding in Norris Square on Thursday morning was shut off by emergency crews from the Philadelphia Water Department, city spokesperson Laura Copeland said. The break occurred near the corner of N. 4th and Berks streets and officials were notified around 6:45, the department said in a tweet. Crews determined that a 20-inch pipe that runs under the intersection broke and were able to shut it off around 9:30. A section of 4th Street near the intersection of Hewson buckled under a Chevy Tahoe, as a motorist attempted to drive through the floodwaters.

Who won the week in Philly sports: Rhys Hoskins rakes for the Phillies
Did I expect to be writing about the Phillies so heavily before the start of this MLB season? Yes. Did I expect to be writing about them this much as of last month? No, not under any circumstances. That's what the June Phillies have done to Philly though. Going 15-3 in their first 18 games this month, the Phils have thrilled with moonshots, clutch hits and extra inning wins. The Phils are just 2.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot in the National League and are surging as their hitters rake.

Red hot Rhys Hoskins, surging Garrett Stubbs latest heroes for Phillies
Just when the city was ready to decry the Phillies squad as "the same old Phillies," they do exactly what the fan base doesn't expect them to do. They snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. It was as if the Phillies' momentum from that 10-game winning streak was sputtering out as the team was about to drop two of three to the Marlins. But have no fear, backup catcher Garrett Stubbs is here: A few points on the Phils as of late...Hot Stubbs Homer Machine 🛁""Stubbs rips one into the afternoon..." may not have the greatest ring to it, but another unlikely Phillies win has the team at 32-31 and four games out of the second Wild Card spot as of this writing.

Phillies prospect watch: Andrew Painter is a stud, Logan O'Hoppe could be a trade chip
It's been hard to get legitimately excited about the Phillies this year, as spurts of brilliance inevitably lead to struggles and losses. The team is mired yet again around .500.The team's pool of top prospects has to be a source for optimism, right? One of the biggest frustrations with the organization in recent years has been their inability to take young and promising talent and turn them into homegrown stars. Year after year, there is a divide among the team's top rated prospects, with them either falling into the "nowhere near ready" category, or the "almost 25 years old, what's the hold up" category.

Why you should see a dermatologist at least once a year
Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body? Not only does this vital organ protect everything it covers — it also prevents dehydration, regulates temperature, and houses the nerve endings that enable your sense of touch. Being your body's largest organ might be reason enough alone to make an appointment with your dermatologist, but an annual skin screening is important for many other reasons. Here are five: 1. You notice a change in your skin You should check your own skin regularly and note any changes.

Sun Ra House in Germantown gets historic landmark designation
The Germantown home of legendary jazz composer and bandleader Sun Ra has been designated a historic landmark by the Philadelphia Historical Commission, ensuring that the property gets the ongoing maintenance and care it needs to be preserved. Sun Ra, born Herman Blount in Alabama, rose to prominence as a jazz multi-instrumentalist in Chicago during the 1940s. He spent a period of his career in New York City before settling at the 5626 Morton St. home in Philadelphia in 1968, making it the base of operations for The Arkestra collective — a changing ensemble.

Phillies offense is dominating, should make them contenders
When the Phillies front office decided they wanted to take the common sports phrase "the best defense is a good offense" to it's extreme, this is what they had in mind.Through 35 games this season, the 17-18 Phillies have played the fifth toughest schedule so far in the National League, dueling 23 times with teams currently in the playoff picture and routinely running up against aces like Max Scherzer and Walker Bueheler. At first glance, the team looks like it is treading water in the standings, and with the Padres, Dodgers, Braves, Mets, Giants Angels and Brewers (geez) all to come next on the schedule, the team may have to continue to do so for the next few weeks as each is a contender right now too.

MRI confirms ligament tear in Joel Embiid's thumb, surgery expected after playoffs
Sixers center Joel Embiid has a torn ligament in his thumb, an MRI confirmed on Sunday, matching fears already held internally by the front office. Head coach Doc Rivers would not outright name the diagnosis at the team's practice facility in Camden, but he said that their initial suspicions were right. "It just confirmed what we thought," Rivers said Sunday. "There literally will be no change. We thought what it was, and it was. So you just keep moving on."The good news, if we try to spin it as if there is some, is that Philadelphia had already been acting as if this was the case, and Embiid's determination to play through the issue is unchanged based on receiving an official diagnosis.

Pennsylvania House approves bill that would ban transgender athletes from playing women's sports
Legislation that would prohibit transgender women from competing on female sports teams in Pennsylvania took a step forward Tuesday when the state House of Representatives approved the measure. The Republican-sponsored bill passed the House largely along party lines by a vote of 115-84. The legislation, formally known as the "Fairness in Women's Sports Act," will now head to the Senate for consideration. But Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, previously vowed to veto the measure if it reaches his desk. The bill would require public schools and colleges to designate their sports teams, including intramural and club teams, as male, female or coed based on biological sex.

Can melatonin gummies solve family bedtime struggles? Experts advise caution
For three exhausting years, Lauren Lockwood tried to get her son Rex to sleep through the night. As an infant, he couldn't sleep without a blanket over his carrier to drown out the world around him. At age 2, it sometimes took hours for him — and her — to fall asleep, only for him to be jolted awake from night terrors that left him shrieking in panic. Over the years, Lockwood, a nurse midwife who runs a group for new moms from her home in Oakland, California, experimented with a gamut of approaches to bedtime.

LGBTQ people who experience conversion therapy — a discredited practice that seeks to "cure" homosexuality — are at high risk for developing serious mental health issues, like depression, substance use and suicide, according to a study published Monday. The study adds to a collection of research on the harmful impacts of conversion therapy, which sometimes begins at a young age. Researchers found that 47% of LGBTQ people who received conversion therapy suffered severe psychological distress, compared to 34% of those who did not undergo the practice.

On Friday, former Philadelphia Eagles scout and current NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah spent a couple hours answering questions from reporters about the NFL Combine and the 2022 NFL Draft. Many of those questions were about the Eagles. I was interested to read through his thoughts on the Birds, so maybe you are too? 🤷‍♂️ Here's what Jeremiah said, and I'll throw in my two cents as well.Question: The Eagles have drafted receivers in the first round in back-to-back drafts. Is it a realistic possibility that they do it again? And if you're looking at this crop, would it make sense for them to try to draft someone that would complement DeVonta Smith?Jeremiah: Yeah, when you've got three ones I think all options are on the table.

Finding people you can trust and believe in this time of year is quite tricky in the NBA, but ESPN's Brian Windhorst is sending a message loud and clear right now — he believes James Harden is pushing for a deal to get done, and that talks are more serious than some people seem to be letting on.Windhorst, whose comments about "The Deal Zone" inspired a lot of bad Kenny Loggins jokes and photoshops on Twitter, joined Mike Greenberg to discuss the latest in the rumor mill on Wednesday morning. Howie Roseman says Jalen Hurts will be Eagles starter in 2022 — what other choice did he have?
When Howie Roseman said, in no uncertain terms, that Jalen Hurts will be the starting quarterback for the Eagles next season, you probably had the same thought everyone else did upon learning the news. What else is he supposed to say? After all, this is the same general manager who, just over a year ago, said "when you have players like that, they're like fingers on your hand. You can't imagine that they're not part of you, that they're not here. That's how we feel about Carson."Wentz was promptly traded for a conditional first round pick and as well as a third, and Roseman looks like a genius because of it.
