Smelter key to renewable energy strategy
Rio Tinto will ultimately determine the direction of Southland's renewable energy strategy. Report recommends decarbonised study by 2030 A Southland Murihiku Regional Energy Strategy 2022-2050 report released by Great South yesterday revealed the direction of the province's decarbonisation pathway would primarily depend on whether Tiwai Smelter, part-owned by Rio Tinto, closed at the end of 2024 or remained open. A closure would result in an over-supply of electricity from the Manapouri hydro-electric station which could be used locally for the proposed Southern Green Hydrogen (SGH) and ammonia plant or be rerouted to northern centres on an aged and inadequate network causing large transmission losses.

Policy has ‘not helped'
Failure to apply a policy aimed at keeping the ballooning number of low-enrolment papers in check has "not helped" the University of Otago's financial woes. The university, which has more than 500 papers below its own enrolment threshold, attributed the omission to the disruption of Covid-19. A spokeswoman said university leaders had not wanted to burden busy staff with the audits required by its papers, enrolments and the use of resources policy — but a working group was now reviewing the situation.

England thrash Iran 6-2
England got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start as they rattled in the goals past a shell-shocked Iran and cruised to an impressive 6-2 Group B victory in a timely return to form for Gareth Southgate's side. England came into the tournament without a win in six games, but a dynamic opening 45 minutes in which Jude Bellingham scored his first England goal, Bukayo Saka doubled the lead and Raheem Sterling grabbed a third set up a second-half stroll. Saka's second goal after the break allowed them to take their foot off the gas and opened the door for Iran to grab one back through Mehdi Taremi, before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish rounded off England's scoring.

The architect who became a chef ...
... and brought a new twist in dining to Dunedin's Grand Casino. Architecture and culinary creation might seem poles apart as career choices, but when Leo Park was advised to ‘retire' from his architectural job in South Korea, he transitioned into cooking – eventually landing an executive chef's position at Dunedin's Grand Bar and Restaurant in the Grand Casino. Think about the vision and skill required to create buildings and what's inside them, and it's not hard to see a comparison with a chef's skill to devise a dish, create it, then plate it.

Southern Rat race is on as competition for stock rises
Andrew Hou Andrew Hou, of Roslyn Pharmacy, in Dunedin had his children travel to Christchurch to buy rapid antigen tests. Of the thousands he bought, he has hundreds left. The scramble is on to obtain the Rats, which are now the dominant form of testing for Covid-19 and became available for retail yesterday, if they could be sourced. "Businesses need them. Students need them. It's really tough to get stock. It's pretty much my wife's full-time job to find tests," Mr Hou said. Business South chief executive Mike Collins said access to Rats was a priority for businesses and he had been approached for advice about where to find them.

Toot toot! Get on the travel planning bus
Hamish Cameron studied politics and economics before becoming a policy analyst. 'But I didn't have a lasting passion for tax policy.' Hamish found an education job, where his role in the organisation's Sustainability Committee got him thinking about sustainable choices – particularly sustainable travel. 'As someone who has an economics background, it's something that interests me. How do we use our limited resources to their best capacity?' Hamish is now the Travel Planning Coordinator for the Southern District Health Board, the University of Otago and Dunedin City Council.
