Bret Stephens: Can Biden save his presidency?
This Sept. 11, a diminished president will preside over a diminished nation. We are a country that could not keep a demagogue from the White House; could not stop an insurrectionist mob from storming the Capitol; could not win (or at least avoid losing) a war against a morally and technologically retrograde enemy; cannot conquer a disease for which there are safe and effective vaccines; and cannot bring itself to trust the government, the news media, the scientific establishment, the police or any other institution meant to operate for the common good.

What happened when Donald Trump was banned on social media
Written by Davey Alba, Ella Koeze and Jacob Silver When Facebook and Twitter barred Donald Trump from their platforms after the Capitol riot in January, he lost direct access to his most powerful megaphones. On Friday, Facebook said the former president would not be allowed back on its service until at least January 2023, citing a risk to public safety. Since his ban and President Joe Biden's inauguration, he has posted statements online far less often. But some of his statements have traveled just as far and wide on social networks.

We pay an ugly cost for ads on Twitter
Since Elon Musk became the owner of Twitter last week, there's been a brouhaha over his plans for it, especially the possibility of various fees, like one for verification badges. Those are the blue check marks that let people know an account belongs to whom it says it belongs. They have mostly been granted through an opaque process to notable users — celebrities, heads of state, official agencies, journalists. Some have ridiculed the idea of charging fees, claiming it would undermine free speech and create inequalities.

Jamelle Bouie: Attack on voting rights is partisan. So the response must be, too.
The attack on voting rights in this country is partisan. The response must be partisan as well. But whether out of unspoken political concerns or genuine conviction, key Democrats in Washington do not have the stomach for the partisan combat it would take to stop that attack. 'The right to vote is fundamental to our American democracy and protecting that right should not be about party or politics,' Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia wrote last month. 'Least of all, protecting this right, which is a value I share, should never be done in a partisan manner.

Trouble in China Pushes Hong Kong's Hang Seng Into Bear Market
Stocks in Hong Kong entered a bear market on Friday, down 21 percent from their high near the start of the year, as investors grew increasingly worried that the deteriorating condition of China's real estate sector could spill over into the broader economy. The slump in the Hang Seng Index, which is made up mostly of companies from the mainland, comes as China's economy confronts weakening growth. After three years of harsh Covid restrictions, foreign investment is down, consumers are spending less and the housing market is in turmoil.
