To Keep Pace With Streaming, Songs Are Shorter Today
Streaming has revolutionized the music industry in countless ways, including how songs are penned, the Wall Street Journal says. Hit songs are being written to keep pace with how sites like Spotify track success and pay artists, resulting in shorter tracks. The Journal cites analysis from blogger Michael Tauberg, who concludes that hit songs have shrunk by more than 30 seconds since 2000 (when top tracks were often over 4 minutes). Today, two-thirds of hit tracks are under three minutes. This rewards musicians, who are only paid for a stream after a song reaches the 30-second mark.

Team Europe Tops Heckled US in Ryder Cup
Europe won back the the Ryder Cup on Sunday, just like it always does before its raucous crowd, with Rory McIlroy leading the way and Tommy Fleetwood delivering the decisive point to extend its dominance over the Americans on home soil. The outcome was never seriously in doubt at Marco Simone, the AP reports. Europe started the final day with a five-point lead. McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Tyrrell Hatton put the Europeans on the verge of the cup, forcing the Americans to win the remaining five matches on the course.

Putin Marks Illegal Takeover of Ukrainian Regions
Russian President Vladimir Putin marked the annexation of regions in Ukraine one year ago with a video address Saturday that claimed recent local elections demonstrate that their people want to be allied with Russia. "Just as a year ago in the historic referendums, people again expressed and confirmed their will to be with Russia and supported their countrymen who, through their labor and real actions, proved worthy of the people's trust," Putin said, per Reuters. Putin added that they "made their choice—to be with their Fatherland," per the AP.

Some GOP Donors Ask: What About Youngkin?
It's not a broad-based movement, but major Republican donors are imagining a Republican presidential field with Glenn Youngkin in it. Whispers among party insiders about drafting the Virginia governor grew slightly louder after they witnessed the GOP presidential debate this week, Robert Costa writes in the Washington Post . Youngkin hasn't ruled out a late presidential run, but he told Fox News as recently as Thursday that he's focused on his party sweeping legislative elections in an upcoming vote.

House Passes Short-Term Bill, Leaving Shutdown Up to Senate
The House approved a last-gasp plan from Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday to keep the federal government running for another 45 days, leaving the Senate to decide whether there will be a shutdown. The bill, which cleared on a 335-91 vote, includes funding for disaster relief and other domestic priorities but not money to help Ukraine fight off the Russian invasion, the Washington Post reports. The Senate did not immediately schedule a vote. If no plan receives approval from both chambers by 12:01am Sunday, the shutdown will take effect.

Player Suspended for Exposure
Joshua Primo, who was waived by the San Antonio Spurs last fall and has not played since, has been suspended for four games by the NBA after a league investigation. The reason given was conduct detrimental to the league, per the AP; the league said he exposed himself to women when with the Spurs. Primo, 20, maintains the offenses were unintentional. The NBA said it found no evidence of other misconduct.

Onondaga Nation Takes New York Land Fight to OAS
The Onondaga Nation has protested for centuries that illegal land grabs shrank its territory from what was once thousands of square miles in upstate New York to a relatively paltry patch of land south of Syracuse. It took its case to President George Washington, to Congress and, more recently, to a US court. All attempts failed. So now the nation is presenting its case to an international panel, the AP reports. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights recently allowed the Onondagas to pursue claims that their land was taken unjustly by New York State, providing a unique venue for a land rights case against the US by a Native American nation.

Police Circle Village After Gunmen Storm Monastery
At least 30 gunmen killed a Kosovar Albanian police officer, then stormed an Orthodox monastery in Kosovo near its border with Serbia, setting off ongoing gunbattles that have left three assailants dead and raised tensions between the two former wartime foes as they seek to normalize ties. Police have surrounded Banjska, a village located 35 miles north of the Kosovo's capital where the monastery is located, and the gunfire is continuing, said Prime Minister Albin Kurti on Sunday, adding that the attack had support from neighboring Serbia.

National Cathedral Replaces Images of Robert E. Lee
The landmark Washington National Cathedral unveiled new stained-glass windows Saturday with a theme of racial justice, filling the space that had once held four windows honoring Confederate Gens. Robert E. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The new windows depict a march for justice by African Americans, descendants of the very people who would have remained in slavery after the Civil War if the side for which the officers fought had prevailed. The cathedral had removed the old windows after Confederate symbols featured prominently in recent racist violence, the AP reports.

Motherhood May Bring On Interesting Quirk
All those Instagram posts of wall sockets that look like faces might have a target audience, according to a study in Biology Letters . Researchers from Australia's University of Queensland and the University of the Sunshine Coast investigated whether the human tendency to perceive faces in inanimate objects, known as face pareidolia, changes throughout adulthood, reports the Guardian . Based on prior research, they particularly looked for connections among postpartum women and whether they might be more sensitive to this phenomenon due to their higher levels of oxytocin.

Are We Nearing the End of Breakfast Cereal?
Sales trends in breakfast foods suggest that Tony the Tiger and Toucan Sam may be looking for new work in the future. The Wall Street Journal reports that the top players in the cereal industry—Kellog, Post Holdings, and General Mills—have seen declining sales in recent years, and expect the trend to continue. Other than a significant (5.2%) sales bump in 2020, when more people ate breakfast at home during the pandemic, sales have been on a downward trajectory, falling 8.7% in 2021 and another 3.

10 Fastest-Growing Places in the US
It may be primarily known as a vacation spot, but Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is also fast becoming a permanent destination for more people. The city ranks first in a US News & World Report ranking of the fastest-growing metro areas in the nation. The city is relatively small compared to others on the list, which may be a plus depending on who's looking to relocate. Either way, its year-round warmth apparently helps—evidenced, too, by the dominance of Florida cities. Here are the top 10 areas

These Are the Happiest US States
In some states, happiness seems to come more easily. WalletHub analyzed various environmental factors to see which US states boast more contented surroundings, examining 30 metrics in three main categories: emotional and physical well-being, including such factors as the share of adults with depression or alcohol use disorder, life expectancy, and how well people sleep; work environment (think commute times, number of hours worked, economic security, and unemployment rates); and community and environment, which looked at everything from weather and safety to volunteerism and divorce rates.

Anderson Cooper: My Grief 'Made Me the Person I Am Today'
If anyone understands grief, it's Anderson Cooper. The 56-year-old CNN anchor lost his father, Wyatt, when he was 10 to a heart attack, then his older brother, Carter, to suicide when they were both in their 20s. His mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, died in 2019 at the age of 95. Still, in a wide-ranging interview with David Marchese for the New York Times , the Anderson Cooper 360º host says the career he now enjoys, in which he often has to talk with people experiencing their own pain, wouldn't have come to fruition without those struggles.

About 170 people were injured in clashes with police and fighting between supporters and opponents of the Eritrean regime on Saturday. The government said almost 50 officers were hurt. The Ethics of Returning Your Shopping Cart
His name is Sebastian Davis, but he is better known to fans on YouTube as the Cart Narc. The 42-year-old has created a popular YouTube channel of that name with a simple premise—he busts people who fail to return grocery carts to their corrals in parking lots and films the encounters, explains Nate Rogers at the Ringer . This mostly takes place in the Los Angeles area, though Davis also has traveled abroad, notably to Japan, where no such cart scofflaws appear to exist. The estimate is that half the people Davis calls out dutifully return the cart to the correct place, about a quarter simply ignore him, and the remaining quarter confront him in ways that range from comical to downright dangerous.

States With the Worst Road Rage
Road rage: Most of us have dealt with it, in one form or another. Those different forms—cutting people off, not letting others change lanes, honking the horn, and flipping the bird, just to name a few—are what Forbes Advisor included in its attempt to determine which states have the most confrontational drivers, based off a survey of 10,000 licensed adult drivers across the country. The poll asked about tailgating; drivers yelling or cursing at them, and more extreme actions like drivers forcing their car off the road or getting out of their vehicles for a confrontation.

Tourist Businesses Are at the Mercy of Extreme Weather
For small businesses that rely on summer tourism, extreme weather is replacing the pandemic as the determining factor in how well a summer will go. The pandemic had its ups and downs for tourism, with a total shutdown followed by a rush of vacations due to pent-up demand. This year, small businesses say vacation cadences are returning to normal. But now, they have extreme weather to deal with—many say it's hurting business, while more temperate spots are seeing a surge. Tourism-related businesses have always been at the mercy of the weather.

7 Years After He Went Missing at Sea, No Answers
(Newser) – In 2015, an American marine biologist went missing from a ship hundreds of miles off the coast of Ecuador. No sign of Keith Davis, then 41, has been seen since, and he is presumed dead, writes Rachel Monroe at the BBC. Monroe dug into the case for the Lost at Sea podcast given the unusual circumstances involved. Davis was aboard the Victoria 168, part of a Taiwanese tuna fleet. But he was no ordinary worker—he was what's known as a fisheries observer. These observers set out to sea in fishing vessels and work and live among the crew, but part of their job is to report any illegal activity they spot on the boat.

Rome Fines US Tourist for Eating on Fountain Steps
(Newser) – An American tourist was slapped with a $450 fine after police caught him sitting on the steps of a fountain early Saturday drinking a beer and eating an ice cream. The man had fallen afoul of one of the "urban decorum" rules the Italian capital introduced in 2017, the Guardian reports. Eating, drinking, and sitting are banned at the city's fountains. The Fontana dei Catecumeni was taped off by police Friday evening to stop anybody from sitting down—or diving in—but the tape was gone by the time the 55-year-old American sat down, reports La Repubblica.
