How The Hold Steady Kept It Together for Their Tell-All Book

How The Hold Steady Kept It Together for Their Tell-All Book
Before their State Fair gig, The Hold Steady appeared at the Electric Fetus to talk about their new book, The Gospel of The Hold Steady: How a Resurrection Really Feels . Most of the coffee table-sized book, filled with big, glossy photographs, is an oral history told by the band themselves and their associates, all woven together by the British rock journalist Michael Hann, a longtime friend of the band. It's a worthy addition to the rock book milieu, basically a brutally honest transcription of the band's creative process, internal politics, business decisions, and celebrations and struggles with intoxicants.

The Charcoal Drawings of Kristen Lowe
Good luck to you if you want to draw a bald eagle. Not just because of the ordinary reasons—the difficulty in capturing the jet and ivory feathers, the glinting eye—but more because of how many banal patriotic eagle renderings surround us. Bald eagles are in your wallet; they're jangling in your coat pockets on your quarters that you roll unthinkingly into soda machines; they're gilded on state capitols; they're on postage stamps and truck flaps. This omnipresence renders them all but unseeable, like a single raindrop in rain—and it's likely why the first time I saw a Kristen Lowe eagle, I felt like I had the breath knocked right out of my chest.

Life Coaching for Youth Culture
A former pageant queen, model, and budding philanthropist, Michelle Marie King's teen years looked dazzling on paper. But as the daughter of a military family she felt like a chronic "new girl," unrooted and out of place as she moved around the country. On the low, she was battling an eating disorder and anxiety and depression. ("...I had to sit there in my brokenness, and that's just what life was like then.") Now, she's helping younger generations "eradicate insignificance" with Positive Presence Global (PPG), one of the largest mentor-coaching programs in the country.

Coming Soon: Billy After Dark at Billy Sushi
Should You Buy a Supper Club? The next level to Billy Sushi will actually be down a level. Perhaps, if you saw Billy sitting court-side next to A-Rod at the Timberwolves game a few weeks back, dressed as he was in full Mongolian wear, this will not surprise you. Or maybe you follow the hockey podcast Spittin Chiclets, heard them love up Billy Sushi as the best sushi in the country, and wondered what was cookin' next for him. Most of us already know that Billy thinks big.  Shocking no one, Billy Tserenbat is about to start construction on a cocktail bar in the basement of his popular North Loop sushi restaurant.

Forecasting the 2022 Twin Cities Real Estate Market
If you've had your fingers crossed for a less crazy housing market, 2022 might be your year.  Covid remains a wild card in the market, but Gary and Susan Wahman aren't predicting any major surprises going into this year. Their main piece of advice is to act now as home values continue to increase. 'Covid has had a big impact. People are spending more time at home and wanting more space in their home, and people have been driven away from common living situations,' says Gary. Buyers can expect less panic this year as new inventory comes on to the market.

Pao Houa Her's Photography Immortalizes Hmong Culture
In 2020, when photographer Pao Houa Her's gallerist at the Bockley Gallery in Kenwood gave her a heads-up that the Whitney Museum in New York was interested in a studio visit, she was lying in bed with her husband, Ya Vang, at their home in Blaine. A couple months later, when she received word that she would be included in the career-making every-other-year 'you've-got-the-goods-kid' Whitney Biennial, they were sworn to secrecy, so they had a private champagne toast to each other in their kitchen.

Top Dentists of the Twin Cities, 2023
When your entire mouth is in disrepair, your whole being suffers. Along with physical pain, there is emotional pain. Rather than unabashedly smiling or laughing, you might find yourself covering your mouth—too embarrassed to show your teeth. Being unable to express your joy is a serious matter. Dr. Renee Camara, a periodontist at Wayzata Periodontics and Implants, remembers a patient in her mid-60s whose gums were covered in amalgam tattoos, benign tissue discoloration due to exposure to small silver filling fragments from extensive dental work done throughout the years.

Picnic Basket Theatre Embraces Audio Storytelling
A new nonprofit theater company focusing on marginalized communities is letting their voices be heard. We can usually count the good things that came out of the pandemic on one hand. Rachel Brees, co-founder of Picnic Basket Theatre lists accessibility as one. During the lockdown, many performing arts companies turned to streaming their events virtually. Picnic Basket Theatre is dedicated to maintaining that accessibility— with a focus on marginalized communities. Growing up in rural Wisconsin, Brees, who is also the company's associate director and sound supervisor, felt the restrictions that traditional theater can pose on communities.
