BCP primaries: Most sitting MPs unchallenged
Political analysts are of the view that the move by the BCP to hold early primaries underscores its seriousness in preparing for the anticipated 2024 General Election following the party's decision to pull out of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and go it solo. Fireworks are expected in only two sitting BCP legislators' constituencies, Okavango and Selebi-Phikwe East. The seats are held by Kenny Kapinga and Kgoberego Nkawana respectively, while the remaining Members of Parliament (MPs) are unchallenged.

BDP youth pushes for more representation
While the BDP NYEC cannot actively campaign for its members in the primaries because of the code of conduct, they can only express their wishes for 50% youth representation in Parliament and councils. The BDP will hold its primary elections starting November this year. The BDP youth decry the fact that currently the youth representation at both Parliament and council is negligible. 'We want nothing less than 50% for both council and Parliament representation. Our hands are tight because the party constitution and code of conduct for Bulela Ditswe do not allow us to campaign for other members.

The opposition's waning fortunes
Just for the background, outside the umbrella arrangement, one of the political parties touted to be focused, stable and very strong as a single entity, the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) has also witnessed bitter factionalism tearing it asunder. The party's factions have been at each other's throats forcing it to spend endless time frequenting courts to settle elusive internal squabbles. It does not seem the BPF bitter infighting is going to subside anytime soon as now the party has two powerful centres of power, one led by the party's former president Biggie Butale who still recognises himself as the party president and the recently elected party president Mephato Reatile who is in charge of another party faction.

BOSETU at loggerheads with BIUST
As it is now turning into a trend to see BOSETU at loggerheads with many entities regarding allegations of ill treatment or maladministration of its members, the union has now taken on BIUST as it feels that the university had no reason to suspend the steward. Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday this week at the BOSETU House, secretary-general (SG) Tobokani Rari bemoaned the state of labour relations and allegations of maladministration at BIUST. 'The BIUST leadership has not changed its mindset like the Reset Agenda says and our people at BIUST are experiencing abuse, intimidation and they are being excluded in everything they do as the university does not want to include unions in everything,' declared the worried SG.

In an interview with Mmegi this week LEGABIBO CEO Thato Moruti said they remain resolute in the decisions by the courts declaring the unconstitutionality of section 164 (a) and (c) on November 29th, 2021. Those sections prohibited anal sex. Moruti had therefore called on to legislators not take decisions that would second-guess the courts. Furthermore, Moruti advised the church and the general public that they do not support nor condone any indoctrination of children. BPF: The power struggle persists
Led by former president Ian Khama, as its patron the party initially gained traction as a stronghold for Khama's supporters, with party merchandise prominently featuring his image. However, as the party celebrates its fourth anniversary this month, it finds itself embroiled in internal conflicts rather than rejoicing over its successes. Butale's vessel did not go down like the mighty Titanic and there was no iceberg. His enemies have been plotting their various machinations, setting traps and some sort of Bermuda Triangles of their own to finally vanquish him off ‘their' party once and for all. With countless court victories against them, Butale's rival faction had to navigate the water and steady the sea.

Diamond mining, revenues enter tricky period
The major factors facing the industry in the second half of the year are high inventory levels of polished diamonds in the midstream, which affects demand for rough diamonds, as well as ongoing global economic uncertainties, particularly in major markets such as the United States. El Nino returns: The storm before the storm
The traditional rainfall forecast issued by SADC's Southern Africa Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF) around this time of year, is likely to be delayed this year, but local experts aren't waiting. The Department of Meteorological Services plans to issue its own country forecast by the end of the month and there appears to be some sense of urgency to the matter.
