iPhone 14 Pro first look: Buh-bye notch, hello Dynamic Island
Perhaps the biggest advances in the iPhone 14 Pro aren't things you can see from the outside. The main camera has four times the megapixels as any previous iPhone camera, enabling all sorts of functionality. There are other camera upgrades, too, and they're all boosted by the new A16 Bionic chip and its associated subprocessors. But all people will notice are the things they can see. At the Far Out event to introduce the new iPhones on Wednesday, I was able to see the biggest visual difference: the Dynamic Island–a feature that merges hardware and software while answering the question, 'Do you think Apple regrets not giving the notch a brand name?' The Dynamic Island is the replacement for the notch, a combination of two small sensor cut-outs that Apple connects with darkened pixels in the display.

macOS Monterey 12.5.1 fixes critical flaws that have been exploited
Apple on Wednesday released macOS Monterey 12.5.1, an update to the Mac operating system. The release notes don't have any detail on the update, only that it is 'recommended for all users and improves the security of macOS.' The two security updates affect the Kernel and WebKit and are serious. Apple says the flaw may allow an app 'to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges' and may have been actively exploited. Below are the security notes for the update: Kernel Available for: macOS Monterey Impact: An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.

iOS and iPadOS 15.6.1 patch vulnerabilities exploited in the wild
Apple has released iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1. The release notes are simple, stating only that the update 'provides important security updates and is recommended for all users.' The security content page spells out the changes in more detail, and indeed, we recommend all iPhone and iPad users update their devices as soon as possible. There are two vulnerabilities addressed, according to the document. A Kernel issue described as 'an application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges,' along with a WebKit issue described as 'processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution.

Apple's Self Service Repair program comes to MacBooks
Earlier this year, Apple launched its Self Service Repair program for iPhone, selling genuine Apple parts and tools for users to make certain repairs to their smartphones. While some have called it a good step in the Right to Repair movement, others criticized the effort as a half-hearted attempt by Apple to get regulators off its back. Now, Apple has announced that the Self Service Repair program is coming to Mac notebooks. It begins on August 23, where users will be able to buy genuine Apple parts and tools to repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops in the 'M1 family of products.

Apple confirms iPadOS delay, 16.1 will be the first release this fall
A few weeks ago, we reported on a rumor that the release of iPadOS 16 would be delayed to October. Today, Apple confirmed the delay along with a developer beta of iPadOS 16.1. A public beta will presumably follow this week, though it's unclear whether iOS 16 beta testers will automatically receive the new version. In essence, Apple will skip iPadOS 16.0 this September and instead bring the new operating system to iPads as iPadOS 16.1 in this fall (presumably in October, together with iOS 16.1). In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple said, 'This is an especially big year for iPadOS.

iPadOS 16 will reportedly arrive in October, a month after iOS 16
Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who is typically quite reliable with such things, has a new report claiming that iPadOS 16 is being delayed by about a month. Citing the common 'people with knowledge of the matter,' Gurman says that instead of releasing the new iPhone and iPad operating system updates at the same time, Apple will release iOS 16 in September as expected but iPadOS 16 will come in October. It's not uncommon for macOS to follow a few weeks after iOS, but the iPad software has always updated on the same schedule as its iPhone sibling.

What is Apple's new Clean Energy Charging in iOS 16 and how will it work?
Apple's got plenty of already-announced features coming to iOS 16 in updates later this year. But in the company's press release announcing the initial availability of iOS 16 Monday, it announced an upcoming feature we hadn't heard about yet: Clean Energy Charging. It was just an offhand mention in a footnote about iOS 16 availability, crowded in with other features we know are coming in updates later this year such as Live Activities, iCloud Photo Sharing, and support for the Matter smart home standard.

The M2 Pro/Max MacBook Pros are getting ready for a fall rollout
In case you haven't noticed, you can get a really good deal on Amazon on the current 14-and 16-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro laptops, between $300 and $400 off the regular price. Why such big price reductions? Probably because, as has long been rumored and reported again on Friday by DigiTimes, Apple will replace those M1 Pro- and Max-based laptops with new models next month. According to the report, Apple will ship new MacBook Pros in the fourth quarter of 2022, and while DigiTimes does not state any specifics, it's likely going to be new 14- and 16-inch models, since they're almost a year old and the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro was just released back in June.

Apple puts greater restrictions on iMessage editing and unsending following backlash
One of our favorite features of iOS 16 is the ability to edit and unsend iMessages. Just long-press a message and you can choose to edit or undo send (we show you how to edit and unsend messages here). But advocates have raised concerns that the system could be abused by bad actors–texting abuse is common among those in abusive relationships, and the ability to change or hide evidence is concerning. While Apple has not addressed these concerns publicly, some changes to the system in iOS 16 developer beta 4 seem targeted specifically at them.

Apple pushes a new Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5 to fix audio issues
Apple has released Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5 (19F80), a firmware update for the display that addresses audio problems that have been widely reported by its owners. Initially, Apple recommended power cycling the display to fix the issue—a process that involves shutting down the display, disconnecting anything in its ports, and unplugging the power cord for at least 10 seconds. This update will presumably alleviate the need for such workarounds. While the Studio Display has an elaborate six-speaker system, force-canceling woofers, and support for Dolby Atmos and spatial audio, users experienced choppy audio that would cut out.

2023 will likely bring 3nm chips for the Mac, iPhone, and iPad
According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the iPhones and Macs released in 2023 could feature processors made using a new 3nm chipmaking technology by TSMC. The A17 and M3 processors will be made using this new method and will be in iPhones and Macs in the second half of next year. Reports from December 2021 said that TSMC had started production of 3nm chips after some setbacks, and it was believed that the first 3nm used by Apple would be the M3 for the Mac and the A17 for the iPhone. This new report by Nikkei Asia says that TSMC has developed a new 'N3E chipmaking tech' that's an upgrade from its previous method.

Second, you may not want to update to iOS 16 right away –it's reasonable to wait a week or two to see if there are significant problems that need a quick patch. Scary Zoom flaw allows a hacker to completely take over your Mac
Before you log into Zoom to start your next video call, you should take a few minutes before you join to update your app. Zoom recently released a security patch for a major hole that could let a hacker take over your whole machine. The vulnerability, discovered by Patrick Wardle of the Objective-See Foundation, involves Zoom's automatic updater, which works as a root user and doesn't require a user password. When the updater runs, it checks to see if the software updates are signed by Zoom, but Wardle discovered that it was only checking if the file has the same name as the signing certificate.

Apple expands Stage Manager support to older iPads, delays key feature
iPadOS 16.1, which is slated for release in October, has a new feature called Stage Manager for multitasking. Originally, Apple announced that Stage Manager would work only on M1-based iPads, but according to a report by Engadget, Apple added older iPad Pros that use A12X and A12Z chips to the Stage Manager support list in the latest iPadOS 16.1 beta that was released on Tuesday. However, Stage Manager on these older iPad Pros will not work with an external display. In fact, Apple has removed Stage Manager external display support for M1 iPads, too, but the company says it will be reinstated in a software update.

Rejoice! iOS 16 beta adds battery percentage back to the iPhone status bar
Ever since the debut of the iPhone X in 2017, Apple fans have lamented the missing battery percentage in the status bar. With the introduction of the TrueDepth module and all the cameras and sensors that enable Face ID, the status bar got cut in two with a lot of missing space in the middle. So on all iPhones with Face ID and a notch (everything but the iPhone SE), Apple has eliminated the ability to show your battery percentage on the status bar. You have to swipe down to Control Center to see your battery percentage.

Tim Cook talks inspiration, privacy, and more in a far-ranging Popular Mechanics interview
Apple's CEO doesn't do a lot of big interviews, so the twelve questions asked and answered by Popular Mechanics is something of a treat for Tim Cook fans. For those looking for answers from the leader of the most valuable company in the world, it's a little more disappointing. Unfortunately, the entire interview feels like something created by Apple's own PR team, with softball questions that neatly lead to Cook's polished answers about the company's greatness. There's no pushback on anything, and delicate but important questions like the multiple international antitrust actions facing Apple around the world are never approached.

Speedier USB 4 Version 2.0 is coming to double bandwidth on your Mac
The USB Promoter Group announced USB4 2.0 on Thursday, a relatively minor but meaningful change to the existing USB4 spec. Simply put, it doubles the maximum bandwidth to 80 gigabits per second, allowing for higher-bandwidth display tunneling and aligning with newer DisplayPort and PCIe specifications. USB4 2.0 devices will still use the USB-C connector, and will remain backward compatible with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3. Where USB4 was limited to 40 Gbps, the new 2.0 version of the spec doubles that to 80 Gbps, using existing 40 Gbps USB Type-C passive cables and newly-defined 80 Gbps USB Type-C active cables.
