Navajo Nation reports 30 new COVID-19 cases, 1 more death
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — The Navajo Nation on Monday reported 11 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths. Tribal health officials also say there were 19 new coronavirus cases and one death Sunday, but the numbers weren't immediately reported due to the Mother's Day holiday. The latest combined figures pushed the total number of cases since the pandemic began more than a year ago to 30,620 on the vast reservation that covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. The known death toll now is at 1,285.

Fairness issues loom over trial in Iowa student's slaying
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Legal experts say that it will be difficult to ensure a fair trial for the farmhand charged with murder in the 2018 stabbing death of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts. Jury selection will begin Monday in Davenport for the trial of Cristhian Bahena Rivera. Lawyers for both sides will work to whittle a pool of 175 potential jurors down to 12 and three alternates. The trial is expected to last two weeks. Rivera is charged with killing Tibbetts while she was out for a run in her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa, and hiding her body in a cornfield.

White House trying to put infrastructure deal on track
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is trying to put President Joe Biden's bipartisan infrastructure deal back on track after Republican senators balked at his demand to pair the nearly $1 trillion plan with an even bigger investment package. Tensions appeared to have cooled after White House negotiators assured senators that Biden remained enthusiastic about the deal, even though he said he wouldn't sign a bill unless it was accompanied by trillions more in a separate measure. The Biden team says the president will seek to make a forceful public case for the initial agreement.

Defense queries widow of murder victim about affair comment
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The wife of one of four people killed in an attack at a North Dakota property management firm has testified at trial that comments she made about having her husband 'taken out' if he ever cheated on her were made in jest. Forty-seven-year-old Chad Isaak, of Washburn, is accused of killing RJR Maintenance and Management co-owner Robert Fakler and employees Adam Fuehrer, William Cobb and Lois Cobb. The defense questioned Fakler's widow, Jackie, on Thursday about her husband's alleged affair.

Pakistan Parliament to consider French envoy's expulsion
LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan's interior minister says the Parliament will consider a resolution over whether to expel France's envoy for the publication of controversial cartoons depicting Islam's Prophet Muhammad. The announcement by Sheikh Rashid Ahmad came after his talks with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan party. The group has been rallying since last week for the expulsion of the French ambassador. Ahmad says Islamists will end their protests. In return, cases registered against the group's detained leader Saad Rizvi and his supporters will be withdrawn.

Britney Spears set to speak in court on her conservatorship
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britney Spears has asked to address the court to talk about the conservatorship that controls her life and finances. A Los Angeles judge set a June hearing Tuesday to hear from Spears. The singer's lawyer, Samuel Ingham III, told the judge that she had requested a chance to talk, but he gave no indication of what she wanted to say. It's not clear whether the hearing will be public. About 50 fans from the so-called #FreeBritney movement picketed outside the courthouse. One woman had her head shaved during the demonstration in solidarity with Spears, who famously shaved her own head just before the conservatorship was established.
