China's children may be next in line for COVID-19 vaccines
Doing so, however, may be easier said than done for reasons ranging from vaccine hesitancy to vaccine availability. Even in countries with enough vaccines to go around, some governments are having problems convincing adults that the shots are safe and necessary despite studies demonstrating they are. Such concerns can be amplified when dealing with society's youngest. There's also the issue of approval. Few regulators around the world have evaluated the safety of COVID-19 shots in kids, with the majority of shots approved only for adults right now.

'Suffocated': Art becomes form of protest against Olympics
T-shirts, drawings and other artwork have become a form of protest over the decision to hold the Games against medical advice and the public's opposition. Officials have responded in some cases by demanding the sometimes satiric art and merchandise be removed, and the artists say their freedoms are being curtailed. "What I can do instead of going to protests is to use my expertise in art," said Sakauchi of her motivation to produce the paintings. She has never participated in street protests or incorporated political issues into her abstract paintings in the past, but the Tokyo Olympics have been a tipping point.

Facebook arrest video leads to protests in South Carolina
The two men were taken into custody at a gas station Wednesday afternoon. A Facebook video showed several officers wrestling with both men and forcing them to the ground. One officer is seen throwing punches and a man's face was bloodied. Two officers have been placed on leave and the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the arrest, Rock Hill Police Chief Chris Watts said at a news conference Thursday where he spoke with a local civil rights leader. "The incident has been under review since yesterday when it occurred.

Long-haul carrier Emirates to ship aid for free into India
By JON GAMBRELL Updated: May 09, 2021 12:20 AM Created: May 09, 2021 12:12 AM DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Dubai's long-haul carrier Emirates will begin shipping aid for free into India to help fight a crushing outbreak of the coronavirus, the airline said Sunday. The offer by Emirates, which has some 95 flights weekly to nine cities, comes as air freight costs have skyrocketed. That's as air cargo demand has risen to its highest recorded level ever amid the pandemic, which has seen carriers including Emirates fly cargo in otherwise-empty passenger seats.

Back to square one? Trump decision still weighs on Facebook
For years, he and other Facebook executives have insisted that Facebook should not be the "arbiter of truth" and that as a tech company it shouldn't be making decisions on thorny societal matters such as free speech. Zuckerberg has stated publicly numerous times that he supports government regulation, although the rules Facebook wants aren't always the same as those regulators might seek. The company said this week it has no updates on its plans for Trump's accounts beyond what it said last week, when it said it will review the board's decision and "determine an action that is clear and proportionate.

Leaving home: West Virginia population drop is largest in US
Reasons for leaving vary, but common themes emerge: a lack of opportunity or low pay; not enough to do; a political climate that some find oppressive, and poor cellphone and internet service. According to the Census Bureau, only 79% of West Virginian households have a broadband internet subscription, the fifth-smallest rate in the country. The population has suffered from changing demographics, with deaths outpacing births for the past two decades, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

He was speaking of a climate fight growing more urgent, as global warming from the burning of fossil fuel intensifies, and more fraught, as the United States' own wildly swinging seesaw politics imperil Biden's climate efforts and again threaten global momentum on the matter. With the summit underway, the U.S. House on Friday finally passed a stalled infrastructure bill that contains some important measures to cut U.S. emissions. San Francisco DA sues 3 California-based 'ghost gun' makers
Boudin's lawsuit comes amid mounting criticism over his response to rising crime rates and a wave of anti-Asian violence in the city, which has been routinely video-recorded and spread virally. Critics say the city's most powerful law enforcement officer is intolerably lenient, particularly toward those responsible for rampant theft, drug abuse and street crimes. Critics say Boudin, a progressive who ran on police reform, has repeatedly declined to file charges in cases where the perpetrators went on to commit more serious crimes.

That is a similar technology to the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. But unlike AstraZeneca's two-dose vaccine, the Russian approach uses a slightly different adenovirus for the second booster shot. Mexico's assistant health secretary, Hugo López-Gatell, said the Russians have found that the first adenovirus grows much more quickly than the second. López-Gatell said Russian scientists are now pushing the idea of abandoning the idea of giving the two separate compounds several weeks apart and instead giving a second booster shot of the first compound six months apart, an approach called "Sputnik Light.

Prison group sues to keep immigrant detention center open
GEO seeks a preliminary injunction and also argues the state law would force the detention center to shutter in September, which is much earlier than many people assumed. The struggle over the 1,575-bed Northwest ICE Processing Center - one of the country's largest for-profit, privately run immigration jails - follows years of criticism by activists and human-rights advocates saying immigrants held there are given inadequate food and medical care, and spend much longer on average in solitary confinement than at other such institutions.

CDC panel debates: Should all school kids get COVID vaccine?
Doctors who've cared for hospitalized youngsters hope parents embrace Pfizer's kid shots, saying they're safe and far better than gambling that a child will escape a coronavirus infection. "I've seen plenty of children in this age group that have been seriously ill," said Dr. Matthew Linam, an infectious disease specialist at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. "The risk of significant infection is still very real in this population." While COVID-19 causes more serious illness in the old than the young, there have been more than 8,300 hospitalizations of kids ages 5 to 11, about a third requiring intensive care, according to government data.

California governor declares drought emergency in 2 counties
About three-quarters of the western United States is in what is called a megadrought Last week, hundreds of farmers who rely on a massive irrigation project spanning the Oregon-California border were told they'll get a fraction of the water they need as federal regulators attempt to balance agriculture with federally threatened and endangered fish species central to the heritage of several tribes. The two California counties spotlighted by Newsom are part of the Russian River watershed, which is about 110 miles (177 km) long and stretches from the Redwood Valley and Ukiah down to Santa Rosa.

"Google's data centers in The Dalles in Wasco County help millions of people find directions, send emails, and search for information every day," said Franko, regional head of data center public affairs. The new data centers would go on the site of a former aluminum smelter, shuttered in 1987, that emitted so much pollution it became a Superfund cleanup site. First up is the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Ioniq 5 is similar in size to the Honda CR-V, but since there's no engine, its front end is shorter. The extra length is between the wheels, which should translate to legroom that rivals that of a midsize crossover.
