Tiny meteorite may have caused coolant leak from Soyuz capsule
WASHINGTON - Russian and NASA engineers were assessing a coolant leak from a Soyuz crew capsule docked with the International Space Station (ISS) that may have been caused by a micrometeorite strike. The coolant leak forced the last-minute cancellation of a spacewalk by two Russian cosmonauts on Wednesday and could potentially impact a return flight to Earth by three crew members. Russia's space corporation Roscosmos and the US space agency said the leak on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft did not pose any danger to the astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the ISS.

AI boss says 'heavy regulation' now could block progress
OpenAI chief Sam Altman spoke out Monday against immediate "heavy regulation" that could hamper the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, but stressed the need for long-term institutional oversight. Altman, whose company created the ChatGPT bot, last month told US lawmakers that governmental regulatory intervention was needed to face the risks of AI. In remarks at Israel's Tel Aviv University, Altman on Monday stressed that his call for oversight was not aimed at "the systems of today".

CAPE TOWN - Civil society groups are calling for multiple life sentences with no chance of parole for Moehydien Pangaker. The 56-year-old is facing 27 charges, including rape, murder, sexual assault. He was on trial for the kidnapping, rape and murder of 8-year-old Tazne van Wyk in 2020. Auto industry races into metaverse at CES
LAS VEGAS - Allowing the driver of an autonomous vehicle to watch a movie, a dealer to sell automobiles from a "virtual" car lot, or an engineer to simulate how a new part fits: the auto industry is getting a tantalizing taste of the metaverse at the huge CES technology show. One gadget on display in Las Vegas is an in-car television system, developed by French parts maker Valeo, that needs no remote. To change the channel, drivers or passengers wearing a headset make a simple swipe in the air with their hand, and sensors in the car detect the movement.

WASHINGTON - Warning of "difficult trade-offs" ahead of a feared fall COVID-19 wave, the Biden administration Friday urged Congress to approve $22.4 billion more to maintain key testing and vaccine programs. The request comes as the government readies a new fall initiative for COVID-19 vaccine boosters targeting the Omicron variant after US officials recommended Thursday new Pfizer and Moderna shots. It's raining diamonds across the universe, research suggests
PARIS - It could be raining diamonds on planets throughout the universe, scientists suggested Friday, after using common plastic to recreate the strange precipitation believed to form deep inside Uranus and Neptune. Scientists had previously theorised that extremely high pressure and temperatures turn hydrogen and carbon into solid diamonds thousands of kilometres below the surface of the ice giants. Now new research, published in Science Advances, inserted oxygen into the mix, finding that "diamond rain" could be more common than thought.

Poland blames toxic algae for Oder river fish kill
WARSAW - Polish authorities on Thursday said toxic algae was to blame for mass fish deaths in the Oder river, ruling out industrial pollution as the cause. The conclusions presented at a press conference by scientists and government officials come from a preliminary report to be released Friday, weeks after the environmental disaster unfolded.  The authors of the report said nearly 250 tonnes of dead fish were recovered from the Oder river that runs through Poland and Germany.  Various factors "led us to conclude that the fish deaths were probably caused by the toxic effects of an algal bloom", said Agnieszka Kolada from the Polish Institute of Environmental Protection.

'Man of the hole' dies, last known survivor of Amazon tribe
The "man of the hole" was first spotted in 1996 by a documentary team traveling with officials of the National Indian Foundation, a government agency that was probing a massacre committed against his tribe. Proving the presence of indigenous people in the Tanaru forest area was necessary in order to grant the area legal protection. The footage was featured in a documentary called "Corumbiara" in 2009. In it, the man's eyes are seen peering out from inside a straw hut. A spear pokes out at one point, as if to scare visitors away.

Record measurement of universe suggests 'something is fishy'
PARIS - The most precise measurements ever made of the universe's composition and how fast it is expanding suggest "something is fishy" in our understanding of the cosmos, the astrophysicist who led the research said. The comprehensive new study published in The Astrophysical Journal further confirmed that there is a significant discrepancy between two different ways to estimate the speed at which the universe is expanding.  The study said that around five percent of the universe is made up of what we might think of as normal matter, while the rest is dark matter and dark energy -- both of which remain shrouded in mystery.
