Downtown living

Downtown living
Many European shopkeepers and restaurant owners who operate their shops and restaurants on the ground floor of downtown buildings live in the upper floors of the buildings. They figured it out ages ago that a walk down a flight of stairs beats a commute from the edge of town. Downtown living is also beginning increasing in several Arkansas downtowns, which are actively promoting living in the upper floors like the European. I think that as the benefits become more obvious living downtown will continue to catch on.

Mayoral candidate Choate announced four-point plan
Special to the News-Times Paul Choate, city alderman and mayoral candidate, released his plan this week for the City of El Dorado should voters elect him to the Mayor's Office this November. The four-point plan, dubbed "Paul's Plan," provides a road map for getting El Dorado back on track and our community moving forward. "We live in a great city, but sometimes great cities need a new direction – and a plan." said Choate. "My plan lays out, in simple terms, what I will prioritize as mayor, from professionally managing city hall – and paying bills on time – to connecting our people to public access Wi-Fi in key areas of the community.

Prep ongoing for Governor's Conference of Tourism
Preparations are ongoing for the 44th annual Arkansas Governor's Conference of Tourism, which will be held Feb. 26 - 28 in El Dorado. As a first-time host of the annual conference, local organizers and community leaders, who are working with state officials to coordinate the event, want to put the city's best foot forward for a crowd of 400 - 600 that is expected from around Arkansas and other states. One component in planning for the AGCT is to help out-of-town visitors find their way around the city.

Burnout, low pay and politics are driving away teachers. Turnover is soaring for educators of color
By MARC LEVY Associated Press HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Rhonda Hicks could have kept working into her 60s. She loved teaching and loved her students in Philadelphia's public schools. As a Black woman, she took pride in being a role model for many children of color. But other aspects of the job deteriorated, such as growing demands from administrators over what and how to teach. And when she retires in a few weeks, she will join a disproportionately high number of Black and Hispanic teachers in her state who are leaving the profession.

For transgender kids, a frantic rush for treatment amid bans
By SAM METZ and AMANCAI BIRABEN Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- As a third grader in Utah, mandolin-playing math whiz Elle Palmer said aloud what she had only before sensed, telling a friend she planned to transfer schools the following year and hoped her new classmates would see her as a girl. Several states northeast, Asher Wilcox-Broekemeier listened to punk rock in his room, longing to join the shirtless boys from the neighborhood playing beneath the South Dakota sunshine. It wasn't until menstruation started, and the disconnect with his body grew, that he knew he was one of them.

By SUSIE BLANN and ELISE MORTON Associated Press KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukraine's capital was subjected to the largest drone attack since the start of Russia's war, local officials said, as Kyiv prepared to mark the anniversary of its founding on Sunday. At least one person was killed, but officials said scores of drones were shot down, demonstrating Ukraine's air defense capability. Online education gives El Dorado grads opportunity for growth
Two recent University of Arkansas graduates were formally awarded their diplomas on Thursday, when the second-annual Razorbug Diploma Tour made its way to El Dorado in recognition of the school's online learning opportunities and the students' successful completion of master's programs. Keri Reynolds and Doug Stringfellow, both of El Dorado, were visited at their jobs by the Razorbug, a Volkswagon Beetle decked out in the university's iconic Razorback snout, tail and razor-edged spine. "The tour is promoting online education through the University of Arkansas," Stringfellow explained.

White River refuge biggest, wildest Big Woods destination in Arkansas
I am always looking for an excuse to revisit Arkansas' Delta bottomlands. When my girlfriend, Dalene Ketcher, asked me if I knew a place where we could meet up with her son for Memorial Day halfway between Fort Smith and Jackson, Miss., I said, "Big Woods." "You don't even want to look at a map to see if there is somewhere else we should meet?" she asked. I thought it was a no-brainer. Her son, Aaron, had been working for the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the past month, helping the capital city area recover from the March tornadoes.

SouthArk, Redlands set to meet in region series
With a month remaining in the regular season, South Arkansas Community College has already moved past their win totals from last year both overall and in conference play. The Stars won 24 games overall and 13 in conference play in their debut season. Presently, the Stars have a winning streak that matches their conference win total from a year ago. Thanks to that, SouthArk recorded another first for the program. The Stars moved into the NJCAA Division II poll this week, checking in at No. 20. 'It's good for their confidence, it's good for recruiting, it's good for our team, our town, our college,' SouthArk coach Cannon Lester said of being ranked for the first time.

Hawkins' photography studio has no walls. With a pair of binoculars constantly at hand, he scarcely ever ventures outdoors without a camera. Arkansas' Jackson leading standout group at defensive end
FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas football team has multiple positions on defense that Coach Sam Pittman thinks he and the coaching staff will have to fortify when the NCAA transfer portal re-opens on April 15 for a 15-day span. One of those is not defensive end. Tanya Smith offers refuge for exotic animals at Turpentine Creek
By the time that Carole Baskin was reaching fame through Netflix's popular show "Tiger King," Tanya Smith had been rescuing big cats from abusive situations for decades. Smith and her family began the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Eureka Springs in 1992, often taking lions, tigers, bears and assorted other wild animals from the homes of people and breeders who had no training for caring for wild animals. Turpentine gives those animals rehabilitation, a place to live out their lives with the proper care peacefully.

By MARI YAMAGUCHI Associated Press TOKYO (AP) -- Toshihiro Mutsuda was only 5 years old when he last saw his father, who was drafted by Japan's Imperial Army in 1943 and killed in action. For him, his father was a bespectacled man in an old family photo standing by a signed good-luck flag that he carried to war. On Saturday, when the flag was returned to him from a U.S. war museum where it had been on display for 29 years, Mutsuda, now 83, said: "It's a miracle." When it comes to boys, schools are flunking
By Tom Purcell I trekked to St. Germaine School every morning in my sturdy Buster Brown shoes. Designed for rough-and-tumble boys, these heavy-duty shoes could take a scuffing and, with a good polishing, keep on shining -- pretty much the way rambunctious kids like me were able to do in our elementary school years. The good sisters who ran St. Germaine in the 1970s weren't especially sensitive to boys like me who spent more time fidgeting and looking out the window daydreaming than following their lessons.

FAYETTEVILLE — The Arkansas Razorbacks will have veteran upperclassmen dotting the depth chart at several key position groups when football  training camp opens in August. Yet the University of Arkansas will definitely need some younger talent to begin contributing if the program is to restore the upward trajectory Coach Sam Pittman and the Hogs began creating in 2021 and 2022. Some of those young players, most notably receiver Isaiah Sategna, began earning credentials and building respect among their teammates during the 15 practices of spring, which concluded with last week's Red-White spring showcase.
