Entrepreneurship: The Cycle Effect
From Business at Leeds 2022 | Full issue Brett Donelson leads a group of cyclists on a ride. The rural entrepreneurship series helped give him the confidence to establish, and now grow, The Cycle Effect, which Donelson launched with his wife in 2013. 'The bicycle has done more for women than any one thing in the world—it gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat,' civil rights activist Susan B. Anthony said in 1896.   Today, women still ride bikes for the physical and psychological benefits, which can sometimes be life-changing.

New keen-sighted satellite will view distant stars, assist Webb telescope
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the most powerful telescope ever launched into space, will soon get a new 'sidekick'—a small but nimble satellite that borrows its name from a multicolored sea creature. Last month, NASA selected the $8.5 million space mission, which is called Monitoring Activity from Nearby sTars with uv Imaging and Spectroscopy (MANTIS). This 'CubeSat,' or mini-satellite, will be about the size of a toaster oven and will be designed and built at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder.

A Landlocked Ocean Lover, Using Business to Save the Sea
From Business at Leeds 2022 | Full issue Emma Pearson stands in the Denver Aquarium, which she calls 'probably my favorite place in Colorado.' Emma Pearson is part entrepreneur, part marine scientist, and wholly determined to protect our oceans. Growing up in landlocked Colorado, Emma Pearson (Fin, EBio'22) first dove into the sea through TV. She became addicted to National Geographic documentaries about the ocean, then became passionate about saving it.  By high school, she had started a nonprofit, Sea the Change, to educate and inspire elementary school students in Colorado about ocean conservation.

Entrepreneurship: Trinidad Waffle Co.
From Business at Leeds 2022 | Full issue James Fogerty biting into one of his waffle creations in his kitchen. His fusion waffles include dishes like spicy chicken, banana split and short rib. At Trinidad Waffle Co., waffles aren't just for maple syrup—or breakfast.   'The waffle iron is a piece of technology with multiple planes—a grid that creates a lot of surface area compared to a flat surface, and the nooks and crannies create perfect pockets for caramelization to happen,' said James Fogerty, who opened his waffle shop two months ago in Trinidad.

Buffs Q&A with the dean of students: Finals prep
There's just about a month left of the fall semester, and the finish line is in sight. Whether you're staying in Boulder or traveling next week, I hope you're able to relax and enjoy a well-deserved break before finals. With finals just around the corner, I sat down with Ava Altenbern, a senior studying biochemistry and art history in Arts & Sciences, Olivia McKeen, a senior studying marketing in Leeds, and Chloe Wolff De Grivel Perrigny, a first-year student studying computer science in Engineering.

Kombucha chic: How one student uses microbes, and time, to grow her own clothes
Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani has his suits. German designer Karl Lagerfeld touted the 'little black dress.' CU Boulder researcher Fiona Bell, however, prefers clothing made with the help of a warm glass of kombucha—the slightly-sour beverage brewed by fermenting tea with sugar.  Right now, the researcher is touring the Living Matter Lab at CU Boulder's ATLAS Institute . Tucked into corners and under tables in the lab are mason jars and plastic storage containers filled with brown slurries.

'Bruiser' the bushbaby was killed by a dog in South Africa. He isn't alone
Many of the hallmarks of human civilization—from roads and power lines to pet dogs—are taking a larger-than-expected toll on non-human primates living in Africa, according to two recent studies. The findings result from a collaboration between CU Boulder and three South Africa-based institutions: the University of Venda , the  Lajuma Research Centre and a conservation organization called the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT). They take an almost forensic look at what is killing wild animals in South Africa.

Interdisciplinary Education: Vitro3D
From Business at Leeds 2022 | Full issue Camila Uzcategui, left, and Johnny Hergert make adjustments to a laser in their east campus lab as they work on a 3D-printed dental aligner. The PhD graduates co-founded Vitro3D, which 3D prints implants and aligners, below, that could soon be rapidly created in a dentist's office.  When the Rustandy Building opened its doors in 2021, we knew that the fusion of the engineering and business schools would ignite exceptional opportunities for students. One year later, we wanted to see what that looked like.
