An experimental model co-created with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will allow researchers to simulate and replicate earthquakes in a laboratory setting with the goal of expanding knowledge and advancing earthquake safety for large structures. A collaborative project between Berkeley Lab and the University of Nevada, Reno, Soil Box will study how soil affects the behavior of structures with deep foundations during an earthquake. According to Soil Box's lead designer and researcher Sherif Elfass, the facility is the largest of its kind in the United States and was designed to accommodate different types of soils and densities.
