Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said Sunday that he has called on China to release a Japanese citizen detained in Beijing last month as soon as possible during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. Hayashi is the first Japanese foreign minister to visit China since December 2019. In his opening remarks, Hayashi said it is becoming "increasingly important" Japan and China uphold "constructive and stable" bilateral relations, agreed upon by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their summit talks last November, despite the "many challenges.
