Police yesterday released the name of the man who died in an incident on Moana Road at the northern end of Wainui Beach on Saturday. He was 70-year-old Alan Hjorth of Wainui Beach Gisborne. Mr Hjorth was walking along the footpath opposite the Whales Grave at midday last Saturday when he was struck by a car backing out of a driveway. He sustained critical head injuries and was transported to hospital by St John ambulance. He passed away in Gisborne Hospital on Sunday. 'We extend our condolences to his family at this difficult time, ' police said.
