The Queen sees Rio shanty towns during tour of Brazil
Republished from the Sunday Times: November 10, 1968By Richard WiggThe Queen saw the sights of Rio today, starting with a drive up to the Dona Marta Belvedere to look down on the Sugar Loaf Mountain and Guanabara Bay.Misty weather, with dark blue rain clouds hung over part of the city, however, preventing her from going to the Christ Monument on the Corcovado Peak. It was not the picture book view, but she saw all the city, the skyscrapers, old churches, the white beaches, the green, surrounding hills and the shanty towns of Rio's poor perched high up their sides.
