There are fears that blocking Qatar Airways from adding flights into Australia could cost the economy millions of dollars. Modelling obtained by Nine Newspapers indicates a cost of up to $788 million in incremental economic activity based on half the seats sold to overseas visitors. Transport Minister Catherine King has told Parliament the decision to block Qatar Airways was made to protect local jobs.
