‘I bought my childhood home — but I'm not sentimental'
I was born in London and went out to India for a year or two because my father, a soldier, was serving there. We came back to Britain at the beginning of the war. He was appointed adjutant of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry. We had a little cottage outside a place called Guilsborough. My father died in the war, and in 1945 my mother bought Cold Ashby Hall, also in Northamptonshire. I would have been about eight. She lived happily in it until she died in 2008, when I sold the house.Recently, to my surprise, it came on to the market again.
